I used to be a jailer. We had 2 tiered units.
One day a new inmate was acting irrationally and very distraught. He was on the top tier. I went up the stairs to talk to him. We were standing on the ‘balcony’ we he decided to take a ‘header’ and dove over the railing.
I snatched him by the shirt…damn near got pulled over with him. Thank God I had a big ass and strong hands at the time and used my weight to skirt him near the stairwell and slowly let him down.
Thankfully, our in house shrink showed up right away and we all sat down and talked.
He was dealing with family issues. It made him despondent. I didn’t follow his case. But, I never saw him in jail again. I hope he is doing OK.
P.S. the jail put up fencing on the top tier to prevent ‘jumpers’.
