And mark your calendar: Westworld season 3 is coming on March 15.

Hello, and welcome to The Monitor, WIREDs culture news roundup. The big news of the day is, of course, the Oscar nominations, but theres more than that. Lets get started.
Despite the anticipation they drum up, the Oscars are nothing if not predictable. (Seriously, predicting who will be nominated for, and win, Academy Awards is practically a news mediaand social mediasport.) This year is seemingly no different, as, once again, the Academy announced the nominations today and the field is largely white and not a single woman was given a best director nod. (The nominees in that category were Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Sam Mendes for 1917, Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, and Todd Phillips for Joker.) Joker actually led the nominations across the board, with 11including one for best picture, a category that includes 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite (the first South Korean film to be nominated for best picture and best international feature). Overall, The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood each got 10 nods, while Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, and Parasite all nabbed six. In an interesting twist, Netflix received more nominations24than any other major Hollywood studio or distributor, thanks in large part to the performance of The Irishman and Marriage Story.
Remember that crazy Westworld finale that seemed to happen a few millennia ago? (OK, June of 2018.) Well, youre about to find out what happens next. HBO announced today that the sci-fi thriller will return for Season 3 on March 15. Then, and only then, will we be able to decipher whats happening in this new trailer.
One more bit of awards season news: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the next Golden Globes in 2021, though the exact date of the awards show hasnt been determined yet. The duo previously hosted in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Theres no denying that Tina and Amys comedic chemistry is infectious, said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the event. We cant wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage. In other words, next year, no one is going to have to cringe through another Ricky Gervais monologue.
