Chief Minister Michael Gunner is the new Northern Territory Treasurer as two new members join the Labor Government Cabinet.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner has assumed the role of Treasurer, taking the job from Nicole Manison, as he today unveiled the Government’s new Cabinet.
Key points:

  • Chief Minister Michael Gunner said he will “spearhead the Cabinet’s economic team”
  • Former treasurer Nicole Manison will continue as Police Minister and Deputy Chief Minister
  • Natasha Fyles will continue as Health Minister

Mr Gunner also revealed his Government had elected two new members into the Cabinet: Gwoja MLA Chansey Paech and Sanderson MLA Kate Worden.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner revealed the new cabinet after the new Labor Caucus met for the first time this morning.
“This is the cabinet for the comeback capital. Our job is to turn this once-in-a-century crisis into a once-in-a-century opportunity for the Territory,” Mr Gunner said.
As the new Treasurer, Mr Gunner said he would “spearhead the Cabinet’s economic team”.
“I think the biggest challenge for the Territory is how we step out of the coronavirus crisis economically and I want to take that challenge on myself,” he said.
“It will be spearheaded by me, with Nicole as my deputy.”
Mr Gunner announced his new cabinet on Monday afternoon.
Mr Gunner said he would assume the roles of Minister for Major Projects and Territory Economic Reconstruction and Minister for Strategic Defence Relations.

Despite losing the job as Treasurer, Ms Manison has picked up a slate of “jobs-focused” portfolios that Mr Gunner said were critical to the Northern Territory’s economic recovery.
Ms Manison will take on the portfolios of mining and industry, northern Australia and trade, agribusiness and aquaculture, defence industries and international education.
“These portfolios represent many of our most important industries and are our biggest job-creating opportunities for the future that’s why I’ve asked Nicole to take them on,” Mr Gunner said.
NT Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said the surprise reshuffle of Nicole Manison out of Treasury was a “blow” to the Territory.
“It’s astonishing the Chief Minister has tried to throw his Treasurer under the bus,” she said.
“This reshuffle is going to mean further devastation to our economy in future years.”

Ms Manison has held onto the position of Deputy Chief Minister and will continue as Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services.
Natasha Fyles will continue as the Health Minister and Leader of Government Business, but is no longer the attorney-general.
Selena Uibo will serve as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister for Treaty and Local Decision Making, and Minister for Parks and Rangers.
Ms Fyles has also been handed the tourism and hospitality, major events and racing, and gaming and licensing portfolios.

Mr Gunner said removing the attorney-general portfolio from Ms Fyles’s responsibilities was to increase her role in rebuilding the economy.
“I really needed Natasha to be part of that economic recovery. I think she’s got huge credibility because of the coronavirus crisis response that we have lead,” he said.
“She already knows stakeholders in tourism and hospitality from her work as Alcohol Policy Minister. Those are the two industries probably hardest hit.”
Mr Gunner said the new Cabinet was designed to put its three most senior ministers himself, Ms Manison and Ms Fyles in charge of the Government’s economic and health response to coronavirus.
Ms Finocchiaro, however, has contended the reshuffling of Ms Fyles’s portfolios is an attempt by Mr Gunner to limit her influence in Cabinet and reassert his own.
“We’ve also seen the demotion of the Chief Minister’s most capable senior minister, in Natasha Fyles One can only assume that [Ms Fyles’s portfolio reshuffle] is because she presents a threat to his leadership and he wanted to resolve that issue for himself and maintain his authority with the Cabinet,” the Opposition Leader said.

Kate Worden has joined the Cabinet as Minister for Territory Families, Minister for Urban Housing, Minister for Disabilities, Minister for Sport and Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
Chansey Paech joins the Cabinet as Minister for Local Government, Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps, Minister for Indigenous Essential Services, Minister for Central Australian Economic Reconstruction, and Minister for Arts and Culture.
The Labor caucus nominated Karama MLA Ngaree Ah Kit as NT Speaker.
Ms Ah Kit was previously serving as the NT’s deputy speaker.
