As Alberta announced another 22 COVID-19 cases Wednesday, the provinces premier gave a grim projection for when Albertans can expect a return to the status quo.
Jason Kenney said mathematical projections estimate that infections in Alberta will peak in four to five weeks but that COVID-19 will have public health effects through May and June. He said that though there are not yet any deaths from the novel coronavirus in the province, a loss of life is inevitable.
It is my duty as premier to offer people a sense of hope, but it is also my obligation to be realistic and honest, Kenney said. This is going to take some time, and I think Albertans need to start to wrap their heads around that.
Many of the social distancing measures that we have had to implement are likely to be in place at least through the end of May.
The modelling is based on how the virus has spread through other nations, such as France and Italy, but assumes that the virus will be controlled by social distancing measures.
