Drew Doughty missed practice for the second straight day and is “very questionable” to play when the Los Angeles Kings host the Tampa Bay Lightning at Staples Center on Wednesday

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Drew Doughty missed practice for the second straight day and is “very questionable” to play when the Los Angeles Kings host the Tampa Bay Lightning at Staples Center on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET; NBCSN), coach Todd McLellan said.McLellan said he does not think the defenseman, who left practice early Sunday because of an undisclosed injury, would be out an extended period of time if he cannot play against the Lightning.
“Well, if he misses a game, I would consider that serious when we lose a guy that can play 30 minutes a night for us in every situation,” McLellan said Tuesday. “You know, it’s serious enough that he’s out of the lineup. Is it career-ending? By no means. So it’s a day-to-day thing, and the sooner he can get back, the better it is, but right now that’s now we’re treating it.”
If Doughty cannot play against Tampa Bay, it would end his iron-man streak at 460 consecutive games played dating back to the start of the 2014-15 season, the longest streak in Kings history and fifth-longest active streak in the NHL.
“It’s special for players to do that because there’s so many factors that go into,” McLellan said. “We think of a catastrophic-type injury that takes somebody out of the lineup, but there’s so many bumps and bruises that are hard to play through, and everybody’s pain tolerance is a little bit different.
“And then there’s the sniffles and the flu and everything else that happens. And then there’s also personal issues that go on, babies and unfortunately funerals and stuff like that that the real world has, and so do hockey players or athletes. So to have the longevity that he has had to this point has been a real good reflection on his ability to play through that.”

Los Angeles has not played since Jan. 18 because of the mandated five-day break and 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend.
With 494 points (116 goals, 378 assists) in 902 NHL games, Doughty is tied with Rob Blake (161 goals, 333 assists in 805 games) for most points by a defenseman in Kings history.
Doughty is second in the NHL in time on ice (26:03) and one of two players averaging at least 26 minutes per game; Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot is averaging 26:27. With 27 points (six goals, 21 assists) in 50 games, Doughty leads Los Angeles defensemen in all three offensive categories.
Alec Martinez, second among Kings defensemen in time on ice (21:18), would see an increased role if Doughty cannot play, said McLellan, who also said the rest of Doughty’s minutes would be assigned “just by feel and play.
“The rest of them, everybody has to step up, and his 28-30 minutes gets distributed around,” McLellan said. “And if somebody is playing a little better, they may get a few more minutes, and vice versa.”
Derek Forbort, who returned to practice Tuesday after not participating Monday because of a back injury that caused him to miss the first 43 games this season, said it would be important for he and his fellow Los Angeles defensemen not to do too much if Doughty is not available.
“We’ve just got to simplify, especially without one of the best defensemen in the world in our lineup,” Forbort said. “I think if we just simplify, play good defensively and move pucks, we should have a good chance against this high-powered offense of Tampa [Bay].”
