Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has admitted it was a “unique” feeling scoring against Milan and claimed it was “a really important moment”.
De Vrij helped the Nerazzurri turn the Derby della Madonnina after being down by two goals at the break. The Dutch defender put the home side ahead with a header to make it 3-2.
Romelu Lukaku put the last nail in the coffin and made it 4-2 during stoppage time and De Vrij admitted it was a “great feeling” to see his header give them the lead.
“It was my second goal in the derby, in a wonderful atmosphere,” he told AD SportWereld. “I will always remember this goal. It was a really important moment in a really important match.
“A unique emotion came across me. The cross from Antonio [Candreva] was excellent. I dived towards the ball and when I turned, I saw it in the net. It gave me a great feeling.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had spurred Milan on in the first half, as he assisted Ante Rebic for the opener and then the former Sweden international added the second.
De Vrij revealed that he didn’t exchange a single word with the 38-year-old during the big match on Sunday.
“It was my first game against Zlatan,” he said. “When I came through at Feyenoord, he had already left.
“His career speaks for itself. He scored a goal and made an assist and we knew it would be difficult. I have a lot of respect for him. No, we didn’t speak, not even a word.”
Juventus lost to Hellas Verona last weekend and Inter now share the top spot in Serie A again, but Lazio are only one point behind the two.
The title race is wide open and this weekend Lazio host Inter at the Olimpico.
“We are now three teams who are fighting, the away game in Rome on Sunday is one of those games that any player would love to be involved in,” he added. “We are convinced about our own strength.
“You don’t come up with a game like that if you don’t have it in you, but we have to show it every week. There’s also Napoli on Wednesday.”
