Washington | Joe Biden is building what increasingly looks to be an unassailable lead over Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic race after the former vice-president on Wednesday (AEDT) won primaries in Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri.
A week after Super Tuesday helped Mr Biden roar back into contention, the former deputy to Barack Obama was set to pick up another swathe of victories.
Joe Biden is now estimated to have 715 delegates and Mr Sanders 584. AP
Demonstrating his huge advantage over Senator Sanders among African-American Democrats, Mr Biden won decisively in the southern state of Mississippi with 81.9 per cent of the vote, compared with Senator Sanders’ 14.4 per cent. The latter’s support came in agonisingly short of the 15 per cent threshold required to win any of the state’s 36 delegates.
In Missouri, with 68 delegates, Mr Biden was in front by 54.4 per cent to Senator Sanders’ 31.6 per cent, with 7.8 per cent of the total vote counted.
Michigan, the biggest prize of the night with 125 delegates and a state Senator Sanders won over Hillary Clinton in 2016, swung behind Mr Biden. With more than a third of the ballots counted, he had 53.1 per cent to 41.1 per cent.
