TOKYOJapanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to announce his resignation Friday, citing his worsening health, public broadcaster NHK and other local media said.
The 65-year-old Mr. Abe, who has long suffered from an intestinal condition called ulcerative colitis, spent 7½ hours at a Tokyo hospital on Aug. 17 for what he said were tests. He returned to the hospital for nearly four hours on Aug. 24, saying he was getting a report on the test results. He didnt say what the tests showed.
Mr. Abe resigned after his first stint as prime minister in 2007, also citing his health. He returned to the office in December 2012 and this week set the record for longest consecutive time in office.
