The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet today to review the latest Covid-19 trends.
The expert group said the epidemic is growing very slowly in many counties across Ireland.
While most recent cases have involved young people, an increase has been reported in cases among the older and vulnerable age groups.
Last night, as 89 new cases were reported along with one death, acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said the trajectory of the disease is higher than where NPHET wants it to be.
Until yesterday, there had been no deaths linked to the virus for two weeks.
Overnight figures show the number of confirmed cases in hospital is stable at 39.
However, no major recommendations are expected from the NPHET meeting today.
Speaking at last night, chair of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, Professor Philip Nolan, warned that the incidence among older people was rising.
In the early stages of the pandemic, he said, the disease occurred across all age groups but was “particularly severe” for older people.
Throughout August the vast majority of cases have been in young people, but just in the last week or so “we have begun to see a delayed increase among older and vulnerable age groups”.
At present, there are 42 confirmed cases in hospital and six in critical care units.
The median age of those in ICU with the disease is 61 and 90% have underlying conditions.
