Tighter restrictions on household visits are being introduced nationwide as part of the efforts to curtail the ongoing increase in Covid-19 cases.
It follows yesterday’s recommendation by the National Public Health Emergency Team that people only have a maximum of six visitors from one other household to their home.
The measure is being accepted by the Government.
Over the last two weeks there have been over 4,500 new cases of Covid-19, with 442 new infections confirmed yesterday. It was the third time the number exceeded 400 in recent days as cases occurred across every county.
The acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said due to the continuing deterioration of the picture nationally and an increase in cases and clusters linked to people socialising, NPHET recommended to the Government that the limit of no more than six visitors to a home from one other household should be extended nationwide.
The measure is already in place in Dublin and Donegal but the other counties will officially remain at Level 2.
People are also being asked to only meet people from one other household in other settings such as bars and restaurants.
Following the latest NPHET advice the Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly renewed their appeals to people to limit their contacts to reduce the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, the latest overnight figures from the HSE show that there are 114 patients in hospitals with confirmed Covid-19, with 20 currently being treated in intensive care units.
It compares with 122 confirmed cases in hospitals reported at this time yesterday.
There are also 118 suspected cases in hospitals currently, of which 7 are in ICU.
