It’s common for companies like these to use automated dialer systems, which are not supposed to be used to call cell phones without prior consent. In fact, under the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, such calls (assuming they are willful) make the caller liable for $1500 in damages per call. It applies to texts too. In combination with state claims, a plaintiff may be able to recover his or her attorney fees as well. Spoofing phone numbers can give rise to other penalties too.
