The death of a 24-year-old woman in what is considered Calgarys latest domestic homicide has renewed conversations about an anticipated surge in domestic violence as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on.
Brittney Ann Meszaros was found dead Monday in a northeast residence she shared with her partner. A 23-year-old man, who police said was in a common-law relationship with Meszaros, has been charged with manslaughter.
Police said the couple had no known history of domestic violence but believe the incident is domestic in nature.
All domestic homicides should serve as warning signs, said Kim Ruse, executive director of the Calgary Womens Emergency Shelter. Your home should be your safe place and if you do not feel safe, there is help available. Its never too soon to call.
Speaking generally, Ruse said the COVID-19 crisis has amplified risks for families experiencing domestic violence with added stress related to unemployment, financial insecurity, health and more.
