The cuts will save the city about $2 million per week. Morgan has previously told city council that public transit faces catastrophic revenue losses in 2020, with the possible financial hole reaching nearly $90 million.
Morgan said the service reductions are spread throughout Calgary, and officials have tried to maintain core parts of the system, including routes that serve hospitals.
He added the city will be watching closely to make sure the system isnt getting overloaded as people get used to the decreased capacity.
Under Albertas plan to start relaxing some of the current COVID-19 restrictions, some businesses could be allowed to open their doors in as little as a week. That could trigger an uptick in transit ridership as people start to venture outside their homes more often.
The citys transportation leader said officials will be watching that process closely to make sure people can keep getting where they need to go safely. But the city also needs to try to stem the bleeding from drastic financial losses.
We have to be very careful and dance on the head of a pin in order to provide that balance, but its about having an economic and financially responsible service, Morgan said.
More information about which routes are being reduced or cut will be available next week through the Calgary Transit website and app.
