Ministers will be briefed by the Chief Medical Officer, Tony Holohan at Government Buildings today, about the fight against Covid-19.
Some Cabinet members are expected to raise Ireland’s two metre social distancing rule, and inquire if it can be reduced.
Dr Tony Holohan is expected to give his analysis on the latest medical data, as well as brief Ministers on how the Covid-19 roadmap is progressing, at today’s lunchtime meeting.
Afterwards, Ministers will have the opportunity to raise their concerns – and a key issue is expected to be the two metre social distancing rule.
At Cabinet last Friday, some Ministers argued that if it was reduced to one-metre – in line with guidance from the World Health Organisation – it would greatly benefit business and school re-openings.
On Saturday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar reaffirmed that the two-metre social distancing rule “stands”, and there has been “no change” to the public health advice.
On Monday, Dr Holohan said that the 2-metre guidance is not a hard-and-fast rule, but added his team thought it was a “reasonable compromise” given where we are currently at.
Today, Ministers will press the CMO for clarity on when that might change.
