Prayers have been said in Newcastle, Co Dublin today for the three local children who died on Friday.
They were named by gardaí yesterday as siblings Conor McGinley, aged nine, Darragh, aged seven, and Carla, aged three.
Fr Kevin Doherty, co-parish priest at St Finian’s Church addressed a packed congregation at 10am mass in the village this morning.
He said it a “darkness” had come to the parish and the community this week, and said it was a very sad week in Newcastle.
Prayers were offered for the McGinley siblings at the mass.
Fr Doherty said they pray for “three very special children from our parish, and they’re in our hearts”.
Many young families attended, along with children preparing for First Holy Communion.
Fr Doherty used a jigsaw of a heart to explain to the children that sometimes we can feel happy, sad, both or heartbroken.
A book of condolence has also been opened in the church in Newcastle.
Speaking outside after Mass this morning, Fr Doherty said we cannot put words on what has happened.
“The darkness, it’s so dark, it’s unspeakable. Grief, heartbreak, loss. And it affects and touches everybody in this community”, he said.
Fr Doherty added that “out of the darkness, somehow we have to find the light. In the kindness of people, there is light”.
Meanwhile, the child and family agency Tusla has activated its critical response protocol in the wake of the tragedy.
It says that the “South Dublin Children and Young People’s Service Committee offers its deep condolences to the family and friends of the three children who tragically lost their lives on Friday”.
It says the CYPSC is working to ensure “tailored and appropriate supports will be available through schools, counselling services, family support services, local groups etc to support children and families through the days, weeks and months that follow.”
