Gonzalo Villar made his first start against Cagliari and thanked Roma coach Paulo Fonseca for the “faith” after his arrival in January.
After coming off the bench against Atalanta and Sassuolo, Villar finally had his name in the starting line-up against the Rossoblu at the Sardegna Arena.
Roma won 4-3 on the night and Villar was happy that he finally got the “opportunity” he felt he has “worked hard to earn”.
“I’m very happy that Fonseca has faith in me. I worked hard to earn this opportunity. It was a great result,” he told Roma TV. “We have been working together for a month, I tried to use all his guidelines and put them into play.
It was a seven-goal thriller in Sardinia, when Joao Pedro opened the scoring for the home side, before a Nikola Kalinic turned the game for the Giallorossi.
Justin Kluivert and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored on either side of a Gaston Pereiro goal, before Joao Perdo scored his second of the night just short of stoppage-time.
Villar claimed it will “boost our morale” at the Olimpico going forward as they worked hard for the three points.
“I’m very happy with my debut and the match. The important thing is the win,” he added. “I worked a lot on the pitch today.
“Cagliari are a good team; they have great players like [Luca] Pellegrini and [Radja] Nainggolan. It’s a victory that boosts our morale.”
He started at holding midfield on Sunday and revealed his preferred position but stressed that Fonseca picks the team.
“The coach decides. I prefer to play in the No8, but I can play in all positions in the midfield. I thank the coach for the trust he has shown me.”
