Melburnians in stage four lockdown have been reminded they cannot drive to exercise spots within their five-kilometre restriction zones, with police warning “unhappy” residents against doing so.

“We understand that some people are unhappy with this restriction.
“This restriction has come from the Department of Health and Human Services on behalf of the Chief Health Officer. As police officers it is our job to enforce these restrictions in order to keep our communities safe, as we all face coronavirus.”
They said officers were patrolling the area to ensure people were complying. Those caught breaching the restrictions face $1652 fines.
A police spokeswoman said officers would continue to issue fines for deliberate, obvious and blatant breaches of the Chief Health Officer’s directions.
“We know there have been some instances where people have been fined for travelling in a vehicle to exercise within five kilometres of their home,” she said.
Police have issued 174 fines to people caught breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directions in the past 24 hours.

They included 31 people fined for failing to wear a face covering and 55 curfew breaches.
Police and Australian Defence Force members conducted spot checks on 4578 people at homes, businesses and public places across the state.
Four people were caught travelling in a car at 175km/h on the Tullamarine Freeway near CityLink on Monday night. The unlicensed driver and his passengers were all fined and the car, with bald tyres, was impounded at a total cost of $7000.

Other breaches from the past 24 hours included a man found reversing on the Calder Freeway to avoid a checkpoint. He told police he was going to a friends farm to help with their baby goats.
Another man, caught driving erratically in Brimbank, said he was going to buy a fish tank for his frog.
The Department of Health and Human Services website states that travelling in a vehicle to exercise is not permitted unless it is not reasonably practicable to exercise without driving somewhere, including for mobility or safety reasons.
What activities are restricted?
DHHS says under stage four restrictions you can leave home to exercise, but there are limits:

  • You must not travel more than five kilometres from where you live to exercise.
  • You can exercise with one other person you live with or a friend or family member outside your home, as long as neither of you travel more than five kilometres from your home. Use common sense and limit the number of people you see in person. If you are exercising with someone else, you should keep 1.5 metres distance between you. Dont hug, kiss or shake hands.
  • You must limit your exercise to once a day and for only one hour.
  • If you are a parent or guardian who is caring for a young child or someone who cannot be left unattended, they may accompany you.
  • Indoor sports centres including gyms, training facilities and pools are closed.
  • Community sport training and competition cannot occur.
  • Outdoor sport facilities are closed.
  • Swimming pools are closed.
