Napoli forward Dries Mertens was tested for coronavirus yesterday and admitted he has become ‘fan’ of the medics fighting the pandemic: “I respect what you do.”
Before the individual training resumes, the players are subject to medical checks and must undergo the coronavirus test before the go ahead.
“Today I had to take the test,” Mertens told Voetbalkrant.com. “A nurse came to my door and he told me that his daughter is a big fan of mine. I replied: ‘It’s me that’s your fan because I respect what you do’.
“I also asked him what the most difficult thing has been, and he answered: ‘to go home and not be able to hug my children because I work in the hospital’. I thought it was a sad story.
“We are trying to help with the distribution of masks, and we hope everything will end as soon as possible.”
