Just before 6am Irish time, US president Donald Trump tweeted that he and the First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Two hours earlier he had tweeted that his close aide, Hope Hicks, had tested positive and that he and Mrs Trump were awaiting their own test results and were quarantining.
Prior to the release of his own test results, Mr Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that it was difficult for him and those close to him to avoid the virus since so many others, including members of the military, try to interact with them.
Once his positive test result was known, things moved quickly.
The White House released a letter from the US president’s doctor confirming the diagnosis. 
This is the new reality for Donald Trump. No more rallies and public appearances, at least for the coming weeks, meaning there are now big questions over what the final month of campaigning will look like for the president.
“The President and the First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence,” Dr Sean P Conley wrote.
“Rest assured, I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering,” he wrote.
He added that the White House medical team would remain vigilant and of course that goes without saying particular when you consider that at age 74, Donald Trump is in the higher risk category of developing serious symptoms.
There is now renewed focus on safety protocols within the White House and on Donald Trump’s downplaying of the virus, including his belittling of mask-wearing.
The president’s daily schedule for today was issued by the White House last night and included a phone call on Covid-19 support for vulnerable seniors, a meeting with supporters at the Trump Hotel in Washington and a campaign rally in Florida.

Once the positive Covid-19 test was confirmed a new schedule was issued which just contained the phone call from the White House, everything else was cancelled.
