Tom Cruise announced that he was partnering with NASA to shoot a film in space and said in May he wanted to use a SpaceX aircraft to get there.

Tom Cruise plans to shoot a new movie in Space, and Universal Pictures has been negotiating to land the movie, Variety reported.
In May, Business Insider reported that Cruise was partnering with NASA to shoot a movie in space and was hoping to get there on a SpaceX rocket.
The movie will be directed by Doug Liman and sources told Variety the production will likely cost close to $200 million. It would be the first movie to be shot in space.
According to Variety, the film could have a major impact on the industry. One person familiar with the project told the outlet: “you can’t be sure what you’re going to get up there, and you have one shot to do it.”
Business Insider reported that NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed that the agency will work with Cruise to shoot the film in International Space Station.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news of the project to shoot in space, there’s still no information on a storyline or script for the movie. There is also no timeline on when this movie would begin production.
Variety reported that two major streaming platforms were not invited to bid on the project.
Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX said the project “should be a lot of fun,” in a tweet in May.
At the end of May, SpaceX launched two astronauts into orbit. It was a historic moment for the private rocket company and the first launch from American soil since July 2011.
Universal Pictures did not respond to Business Insider’s email request for comment at the time of publication.
